In 1985 Carole had her three daughters enrolled in the Mount Airy Full Gospel School. Each afternoon she would go to the school parking lot to pick up the girls and meet with other parents doing the same.  Some of the parents were in need of help cleaning their home and Carole offered.

At the same time her husband, Will, was working under contract for the U.S. Naval Academy managing and directing an aviation program. In January 1986 the Academy announced that the contract was going to be cancelled due to budget restrictions.   Jobs in aviation management are not just in your neighborhood, so to keep his career the family would have to move. The Barber family had done this often over the span of 15 years and Carole just didn't feel up to another move. Carole proposed that Will use his management skills to launch a cleaning business in Mount Airy.

Carole already had 10 customers, cleaning two homes a day; five days a week. Will joined her and doubled the number of homes being cleaned within a few months. In April 1986 the company hired its first employee.

After 18 months of cleaning and managing Will had to dedicate his time to the full time managment of the company. Carole would continue to clean and teach the staff members.

As the Town of Mount Airy grew, so did Caroles Cleaning Service. What was once a corn field across from the American Legion on Prospect Road, is now the community of Village Gate and Twin Ridge.  The town now has two elementry schools, one for Carroll County and one for Frederick County.  In 1985 all the town's children attended the same elementry school.

Caroles Cleaning Service has grown from one Crew to four Crews (a staff of 14 cleaners); from 10 customers to just under 200.

Will & Carole

The Town of Mount Airy and the neighboring communities are filled with working couples. Most of these workes travel one to two hours to their work place, then work 8 to 10 hours and return home. This is done 5 to 6 days a week.
